even vs even though vs even if — modifier vs conjunctions (GiU Unit 112)

His Spanish isn’t very good, even after three years in Spain. ✓

even = emphasizer: “surprisingly, up to including”. Modifies the phrase after three years directly — no clause needed.

type needs example
even adverb modifier a word/phrase even after three years / even at night / even John
even though concession conjunction full clause (fact) even though he’s lived there 3 years
even if hypothetical concession full clause (condition) even if he studied hard
if plain condition full clause if it rains

No subject+verb after the gap → even alone (modifies phrase). Fact-clause → even though. Hypothetical → even if.

  • ✗ even after he lived… would be “even after he’d lived” — still phrase-level
  • ✓ His Spanish isn’t good even though he’s been there three years (full clause)
  • ✓ Even with the heating on, it was cold in the house. (with-phrase, no verb inside → bare even; even sits before the with-phrase)
even if even though
Status of clause hypothetical — may not be true, wouldn’t help/matter anyway factual — it is true, and still the result stands
Frame “no matter whether, it makes no difference” “despite the fact that”
Example We won’t catch it now even if we run (we’re not running; running wouldn’t help) We didn’t catch it even though we ran (we did run — still missed it)

Test: is the clause actually happening? → even though. Is it imagined/a would-be condition? → even if.
