まで / までに / までには — until vs by (deadline machine)

form pieces meaning example
まで まで until — continuation up to a point 5時まで待つ = wait until 5
までに まで + に by — a one-shot action done at/before the point 5時までに来る = come by 5
までには まで + に + は by (at the latest) — は adds emphasis/contrast 明日までには直しておきます = I’ll fix it by tomorrow
  • Continuing state/action (待つ wait, 寝る sleep, いる stay, 働く work) → まで: 朝まで寝ていた (slept until morning)
  • One-shot completion (来る come, 終わる finish, 直す fix, 出す submit) → までに: 締め切りまでに出す (submit by the deadline)

Mirrors English exactly: wait until 5 vs be here by 5. English has separate words; Japanese flips a switch with に.

The に sets the deadline; は topicalizes/contrasts it → “at least by then / as for the deadline”. Softens a promise with a guaranteed outer bound:

  • 明日までには直しておきますよ = I’ll have it fixed by tomorrow (assurance)
  • 来週までには返事します = I’ll reply by next week (at the latest)

あなたの時計は明日までには直しておきますよ。 “your — watch — as-for, — tomorrow — until — at — as-for, — fix-and-place — polite.” = “As for your watch — I’ll get it fixed for you by tomorrow.”

  • あなたの時計 = your watch (plain の modifier, not “as for”)
  • 直しておきます = fix-and-place (ておく) — do it now so it stands fixed; ✗ “it’s repaired” = 直っています / 直してあります (てある side — see [japanese/te-aru-iru-oku])
  • よ = assertion/assurance particle
