The killer advantage: JLPT Dec 2027 was “too long” because registration closes 3 months out and exams are twice a year. BJT has no window — you sit when you’re ready. No lost year.

Second advantage: no pass/fail means even a diagnostic run yields a usable number, and improvement is measurable. JLPT N2 fail = nothing to show.

Scoring

Six ranks, IRT-scored (stable across attempts unless ability changes):

Section-level ranks (1–7, percentile bands) also reported for 聴解 / 聴読解 / 読解 — tells you exactly which skill to grind.

Target: J1 (530+) as the floor, J1+ (600+) as the aim.

• 530+ = the standard-hire benchmark (sales/admin/client-facing)
• 480+ = the immigration points threshold (15 pts Highly Skilled)
• Employers need the paper; interviews need the ability

Caveat (documented by test-prep providers): JLPT level ≠ BJT rank. N1 holders have scored J3. Daily-conversation ability does not transfer — business documents, keigo, and keigo-adjacent written register are where scores collapse. That is exactly the gap the Tio Daily video flagged (classroom JP ≠ business JP).

Jogja logistics: BJT currently requires a Jakarta or Bandung trip. Budget transport + a night’s stay around exam day. Book accommodation once the appointment is confirmed.

Study plan

Phase 0 — Baseline (do first)

Sit the exam as a diagnostic, not a final. Cost ~Rp400k. The 3-month retake lockout then defines the next cycle naturally. A baseline score tells you your real J-rank and which of the three sections to attack.

Alternative if you’d rather not spend yet: free official sample questions on the Kanken site (聴解 / 聴読解 / 読解, one section each) plus the official mock test book.

Phase 1 — Materials

• 公式 模擬テスト＆ガイド (Japan Kanji Aptitude Testing Foundation) — official, CBT-matched, full mock test + guide, audio CD / web download. Primary.
• BJT 模試と対策 (Ask Publishing / Pasona HR) — 184pp, 1 full mock test, section-by-section strategy. Published Feb 2026.
• BJT 読解 実力養成問題集 第2版 (3A Network) — reading only, over-supplies each question pattern. Aimed at N2–N1 level.
• Free part: sample questions on kanken.or.jp (all three sections, with worked explanations).

Phase 2 — What actually differs from general Japanese

Business register is a separate vocabulary layer:

• 敬語 — keigo production and comprehension (sonkeigo / kenjōgo / teineigo switching)
• Business katakana — マージン, リスケ, アジェンダ, エビデンス, ペンディング, フィックス
• 定型表現 — fixed phrases for email, meetings, apologies, proposals
• 商取引 — POs, quotes, delivery terms, payment terms, invoices
• Business kanji compounds — 見積書, 納期, 引渡条件, 支払条件, 決算, 経常利益, 売上高
• Charts and tables under time pressure — 聴読解 makes you read a graph/table while audio plays. Pre-read titles and axis labels before the question audio starts.

Phase 3 — Daily loop

• 45–60 min/day: 15 min business vocab (keigo + katakana + kanji compounds), 20 min listening to business dialogue (no subtitles), 15 min reading a business document type (email / quote / notice)
• Weekly: one timed section
• Mock test every 2–3 weeks, analyse every miss by section not just right/wrong
• Listening cannot be replayed in the exam — train at native speed, no pausing

Phase 4 — Register + sit

1. Create/reuse Pearson VUE account (same one as AWS CCP)
2. Book Jakarta or Bandung, pick a date
3. Book travel + accommodation
4. Sit → Score Report in hand at exit → Certificate after 3 days

Timeline

2026-09 → Lock BJT. Get the official mock test book. Baseline self-test from free samples.
2026-10 → Decide: sit a diagnostic exam (Jakarta/Bandung) or self-measure first.
2026-11 → Phase 2 ramp: keigo + business katakana + document types.
2027-Q1 → Diagnostic or first real attempt. Score → adjust.
2027-Q2 → Retake window opens (3 months later). Target J1 530+.
Parallel → CAPIJ/CAPIE (API security) stays the skill track. BJT is the language track.

Because there are no exam windows and no pass/fail, the schedule is yours — the only fixed constraint is the 3-month retake lockout.

Relation to the visa

Visa (技人国) is already cleared by the CS degree — BJT is not a visa requirement. It is:

1. An employer signal (business-comms proof, read directly as a J-rank)
2. A COE supporting document if ever needed
3. +15 points on the Highly Skilled Professional points system at 480+

So BJT buys hiring strength and optionality, not legality.
