stop to vs stop -ing — pause-and-do vs cease (GiU Unit 56)

The baby stopped crying after a short time. ✓ (not “stopped to cry”)

  • stop + -ing = cease the activity itself: The baby stopped crying = the crying ended
  • stop + to = pause [something else] in order to do: He stopped to smoke = he paused (working/walking) and lit a cigarette
  • ✗ The baby stopped to cry = paused something just to start crying — nonsense frame
stop + -ing stop + to
Meaning quit/cease the action pause, then do the second action
Question what ceased? why pause? (purpose)
Example He stopped smoking (quit) He stopped to smoke (paused, lit one)

Most verbs keep their object-direction with either form (like/love/try). stop flips: -ing = the stopped thing; to = the started thing. Same with:

  • I stopped talking (quiet) vs I stopped to talk (I interrupted work to chat)
  • She stopped reading (put book down) vs She stopped to read (took a break for reading)

If the activity ended → -ing. If it began after a pause → to.
