whole needs the/a — all and every are determiners (GiU Unit 90)
The rule
Section titled “The rule”whole = adjective → a singular countable noun under it needs a determiner:
- the whole day ✓ / a whole week ✓ / my whole life ✓
- ✗ bare whole day — ungrammatical
all / every = determiners themselves → work bare:
- all day ✓, all week ✓, all my life ✓
- every day ✓, every week ✓
| structure | bare OK? | |
|---|---|---|
| all day | all (det.) + day | ✓ |
| every day | every (det.) + day | ✓ |
| the whole day | the + whole (adj.) + day | article required |
whole modifies the noun from the side (adjective slot) — the determiner slot is still empty, so something must fill it. all and every occupy the determiner slot directly, so nothing more is needed.
