if vs in case — same-chain vs pre-emptive precaution (GiU Unit 114)

This book belongs to Susan. Can you give it to her if you see her? ✓

Giving happens at the moment of seeing = same chain → if. ✗ in case (you can’t hand over the book before seeing her).

if in case
Link X happens → then Y (same chain) Y done now as preparation for possible X
Certainty of X treated as the condition X may never happen
Timing of Y at X before X, pre-emptive
Example Give it to her if you see her Take an umbrella in case it rains

Can I do the main action BEFORE the case happens, as insurance?

  • Yes → in case: take/bring/leave/save/write down/carry + in case
  • No (action only possible at that moment) → if

Real in-case verbs: take an umbrella, bring a spare key, leave a note, save the file, write down the address.

もし〜たら = if. 〜に備えて / 〜かもしれないから = in case.
