きっかけに — trigger particle phrase (N2)

きっかけ (切っ掛け) = trigger, catalyst, starting point — the event that sets a change in motion.

frame build nuance example
Aをきっかけに(して) A + を + きっかけ + に (role) A seized as trigger for a new intention/phase 引越しをきっかけに家具を買い替えた = moved → (took that as the chance) bought new furniture
Aがきっかけで A + が + きっかけ + で (cause) A happened and led to B (often unplanned) 沖縄旅行がきっかけでダイビングを始めた = the trip (unexpectedly) started diving

Rough split: をきっかけに = active, will seize it · がきっかけで = passive, it happened. Same に/で contrast as other frames (に = role/target; で = cause/circumstance).

Verb clauses use の: 結婚・出産するのをきっかけに.

大学側は、女性医師が結婚や出産をきっかけに仕事を辞めることなどを理由として説明していました。

  • 結婚や出産をきっかけに = “taking marriage or childbirth as the trigger”
  • 仕事を辞めること = nominalizer — “quitting work” becomes a noun (particle-roles)
  • ~ことを理由として = “as the reason” — として role-marking (same として as 結婚を求める手紙を送ったとして news frame)

Literal: “the university side explained, as reason, the thing of women doctors quitting work with marriage/childbirth as trigger.” Natural: “The university explained that women doctors quit after marriage or childbirth.”
