お願いします — humble request + keigo pattern (お + noun + する)

お + 願い + する/します — the humble request formula.

  • お願いする (onegaisuru) = humbly request (plain form)
  • お願いします (onegaishimasu) = polite request (masu form) — the standard spoken form

お願いします = お願いする + します. します is simply the polite (masu) form of する.

Every する-verb takes します in polite speech:

Plain Polite Meaning
お願いする お願いします humbly request
勉強する 勉強します study
電話する 電話します call
予約する 予約します reserve
掃除する 掃除します clean

お + noun + する = humble keigo (lowering yourself to elevate the listener):

  • お (humble prefix) + 願い (request) + する (do) = “humbly make a request [of you]”
Form Register Use
お願いだ casual plea お願いだ、助けて (please, help me)
お願いする plain (narrative/informal) writing, inner thought
お願いします standard polite ordering, asking favors, shops
お願いいたします very formal / humble business letters, official requests

The textbook sentence オレンジジュースと卵2個をオーバー・イージーでお願いする uses the plain form because it’s a statement/example. In an actual restaurant you’d say:

  • オレンジジュースと卵2個をオーバー・イージーでお願いします。 (actual spoken order)

どうぞよろしくお願いします = “please treat me well / nice to meet you / please take care of it” — the standard social lubricant:

  • よろしくお願いします (casual-professional)
  • よろしくお願いいたします (more formal)
  • Used at first meetings, email closings, handing off tasks

Ebot lesson 2026-08-29: オレンジジュースと卵2個をオーバー・イージーでお願いする — asked お願いします vs お願いする. User’s insight: “Onegaisuru + shimasu = onegaishimasu” — correct, します is the polite form of する.
