し — the lister particle (Cure Dolly)

し joins clauses like て, but marks each item as one reason among several — “and (among other things)”.

use example
reasons stacking 安いし、近いし、ここにしよう = it’s cheap, it’s close, let’s go here
“and also” (non-exhaustive) 彼は日本語もできるし、英語もできる = he can do Japanese, and English too
reason for a decision 時間もないし、タクシーで行こう = no time (among other things), let’s taxi
mild excuse 忙しかったし、行かなかった = I was busy (and stuff), so I didn’t go

Two flavours:

  1. multiple し (Aし、Bし) = deliberate list, “not only A but also B, so…”
  2. single し = “A, among other things” — the rest goes unnamed, casual
particle job
て neutral “and” — sequence/actions, no “among others” feel
から “because” — states the reason, complete
し “because (and other reasons too)” — incomplete list, casual
  • 忙しいから行かない = not going BECAUSE busy (the reason)
  • 忙しいし、行かない = not going — busy (and other reasons; casual, softer)

Plain form + し: 行くし · 行ったし · 行かないし · 静かなし · 学生だし. Often doubles with も: 時間もないし、お金もないし = no time, no money (and more). The result clause is often dropped — the list is the point.

Similar mood, different category:

し sih
class conjunctive (接続助詞) — chains clauses discourse particle — clings to a phrase/sentence end
stacks? ✓ Aし Bし = real reason list ✗ cannot
other jobs — contrast (kalau akusih), delimiter
  • Single し (partial casual reason) ≈ “soalnya… sih” — same tone
  • Stacked し ≈ “selain itu…, dan…, lagipula…”
  • Contrastive sih ≈ contrastive が/は, not し

Use “sih” as a tone-reminder, not a structural equivalent. sih’s structural neighbours are the sentence-final particles (final-particles).

し hangs each reason as one item on a hook — “here’s one (of several)”. The listener fills in the rest. That’s why single-し excuses sound so laid-back.
