|---|---|---|
| no article | the institution as activity/status — you’re there for its purpose | in hospital (as patient), at school (studying), in prison (serving), in bed, at university, at sea, in church |
| the | the specific building/place | at the hospital (that one), at the school (the building — renovations, a meeting) |
- She’s in hospital = admitted (BrE, patient)
- She’s at the hospital = at that place (visit/work)
- My son is at school = attending
- The roof of the school needs repair = the building
Why Lisa takes the
Section titled “Why Lisa takes the”A nurse names her employer/workplace, not an activity status. You don’t “attend” a hospital the way you attend school — so the article marks it as a specific institution she works for.
Is the person there for the institution’s normal purpose (studying/serving/being treated)? → no article. Are we pointing at a particular building or employer? → the.
