んです/のです — the explanatory frame (Cure Dolly)

んです = の (nominalizer) + です — same machine as noda-cleft んだ, in polite dress. の packages the clause into a fact-thing; です presents it. ん = contracted の (speech).

Register ladder: のだ (written/assertive) · のです (formal) · んだ (casual) · んです (polite speech — the workhorse) · bare の ↗ (casual question: どうしたの?)

Attachment: verb/い-adj direct (行くんです, 痛いんです) · noun/な-adj take な (学生なんです, 静かなんです) — never ✗学生んです.

use example effect
giving the reason (answering why) どうして日本語を勉強しているんですか。— 日本の生活を経験したいんです “the thing is, I want to experience life in Japan”
announcing background 頭が痛いんです。帰ってもいいですか。 explains why you look pale/need to leave
concerned question (noticed something) どうしたんですか。 “I see something’s up — tell me the story”
soft insistence これでいいんです。 “no really, this is fine”
request-preface ちょっと聞きたいんですが… cushion before asking a favour

んです does not add information — it changes the stance: “this isn’t just a fact I’m reporting; it’s the explanation behind what we’re talking about.” It hands the listener the missing background and invites them to connect it.

  • 頭が痛いです = flat report (fact into vacuum)
  • 頭が痛いんです = here’s the reason — connects to the situation
  1. Omitting it where explanation is expected sounds abrupt/disconnected (answering どうして with bare です = cold).
  2. Over-using it makes everything sound like an excuse — perpetual justification. Fresh neutral news takes plain です: 私はインドネシア人です (intro) vs the explaining tone with んです.

Also never pair it inside with ので/から already doing the job (〜んですは、理由が聞かれたときの答えの形そのもの).

User question “what is ~んです/~のです used for” (2026-09). Corroborated: Bunpro N5 んです・のです; Takoboto んです entries; yomimaru N-desu.
