ばかり — just/only/nothing-but particle (Cure Dolly)

reading build example
just did (recency) た + ばかり その本を買ったばかりだ = I just bought that book
only / nothing but (limitation, often critical) noun/て-form + ばかり 彼は遊んでばかりいる = he does nothing but play (critical!) · 甘いものばかり食べる = eats only sweets
about / approximately quantity + ばかり 5000円ばかり = about 5000 yen

ばかり is a focus particle (副助詞): it scope-marks its host as “the only member of the set I’m willing to acknowledge” — with a speaker reaction layered on (criticism, surprise, or fresh recency).

  • たばかり = “the doing is all there is to it — it JUST happened” (freshness)
  • noun+ばかり = “nothing but this” (excess/criticism more often than neutral だけ)
  • qty+ばかり = “about this much” (vague quantity)

Both = “just did”, split by timeframe:

たばかり たところ
feel subjective freshness (can be days ago: 昨日帰ってきたばかり) objective “just now, this second”
follows past action past action, immediately-observed result
  • だけ = neutral limitation: 甘いものだけ食べる (just states the range)
  • ばかり = limitation + speaker’s sigh: 甘いものばかり (too much of it!)

Rule of thumb: if you could add “…and that’s too much / ugh”, ばかり; if purely neutral, だけ.

ばかり paints the host as saturating the frame — “this is all there is”. Recency: the action saturates the present moment. Limitation: the thing saturates the set. Quantity: the amount saturates the estimate. The critic’s particle.
