had better = specific urgency, should = general advice (GiU Unit 35)

✗ I think everybody had better learn a foreign language. → not OK → should

had better = this person, this moment, with a consequence if ignored. A timeless “everybody” claim has no such urgency → should.

had better should
Scope specific, immediate general, any time
Tone warning, mild threat of bad outcome recommendation
Form had better + bare verb (✗ to/✗ -ing) should + bare verb
Negative had better not shouldn’t
Example You’d better hurry (or you’ll miss it) I think everybody should learn a language
  • ’d better = had better (contraction, not would)
  • Urgency test: is there a now, a you, and a consequence? → had better. Timeless/global → should.
  • Same urgency zone: It’s time + past (It’s time you learned) — also present-specific pressure.

〜したほうがいい covers both, but 今すぐ・あなた → had better; general → should.
