I'm afraid ≠ sayangnya — bad-news softener, not regret (GiU)
The frame
Section titled “The frame”“I’m afraid I ate all the biscuits.” ≈ Maaf ya, biskuitnya sudah habis — NOT sayangnya.
Three different feelings
Section titled “Three different feelings”| meaning | Indonesian | example | |
|---|---|---|---|
| I’m afraid (that)… | polite softener before bad news | maaf / mohon maaf, tapi | I’m afraid I ate all the biscuits |
| Unfortunately… | sayangnya — regrettably, cold/impersonal | sayangnya | Unfortunately, I ate them all |
| I’m sorry (that)… | real regret for the deed itself | maaf / aku menyesal | I’m sorry I ate them |
The trap
Section titled “The trap”I’m afraid ≠ I fear ≠ I regret. It = “sorry to have to tell you” — softens the delivery, not the deed:
- I’m afraid I can’t come (unwelcome info, no regret for the fact)
- I’m afraid there’s no more coffee (announcing shortage politely)
- Can even precede neutral news: “I’m afraid you’ve got the wrong number”
True “I fear” = actually scared: I’m afraid of flying (see [afraid-to-vs-afraid-of]). The + of + -ing form is real fear; the bare I’m afraid (that)… is politeness.
Gap = apologizing for the telling → I’m afraid. = regretting the action → I’m sorry. = detached regrettably → Unfortunately.
